Ask Joelle- A Man’s Beat

Posted by: amaker02    Tags:      Posted date:  October 21, 2009  |  2 Comments

JoElle10 Recently we have gotten some inquiries from the male persuasion on how to handle their skin.  I thought it would be a great opportunity to give them some skin tips for the Fall/Winter.  Ladies, please pass along to the great men in your lives so they can preserve their sexy through the chilly Winter months to come.

Hi Joelle,

Ok, so I have a question that I would like you to address.  Proper skincare is not just for women but for men as well.  Do you have any recommendations for skincare products for men?  I’m particularly interested in facial moisturizers seeing that cold months are ahead of us, which leaves my skin feeling dry and tight. I’m trying to preserve my Rico Suave looks so I can give Will Smith a run for his money…lol

Hi Rico Suave,

Men have special winter skin care concerns that should not be overlooked and men especially need to take extra care of their skin during the cold season.  Even during the wintry weather, the sun plays a significant role in causing skin damage.  It is therefore just as vital to protect skin from the sun during the Winter as it is in the Summer.  Men have different priorities for their skin.  Most skin care designated for men usually combines the advantages of a moisturizer, sun block, and a general hydrating agent all in one.

Here are 5 skincare tips to keep your skin intact this Fall and Winter.

1. Cleanse Daily

Men have approximately 15% oilier skin and significantly larger pores than women do.  Basically, this means you get dirtier.  Cleansing products should be as chemical-free as possible.  Deodorant soaps shouldn’t be used on your face.  They cleanse with harsh ingredients and leave a detergent film behind.  This may irritate your skin and will clog your pores.  So, a significant skin care tip for men is to adopt cleansing as your daily habit.  It’s essential that your pores remain clear of any particles that enhance roughened skin.  Following a routine cleansing ensures that your skin is appealing and tempting to touch.

2. Exfoliate

Exfoliation is like a mild shedding process that unclogs pores, keeps skin clean, and helps reduce acne breakouts.  Exfoliation is usually followed by washing your face with your facial cleanser.  A good facial scrub is essential for healthy, clean skin.  It will remove dead cells and smooth the surface of your face.  The scrub should be strong without being damaging. Stay away from scrubs that contain ground bits of nut or seed extracts.  They will tear and damage the skin.  Exfoliation also helps expose the face’s hair follicles allowing for a better shave.  It is best for men to shave after getting out of the shower.  (This, of course, is easier with a fog proof mirror.)

3. Tone it Up

Toning helps keep the skin clear and firm.  Astringents and toners with glycolic, salicylic, or alpha hydroxy acids work the best for toning the face.  These acids actually can reduce the pore size, and help avoid ingrown hairs.  They are aggressive and have quick results.  Skin that looks shiny doesn’t look healthy, just greasy.  Salicylic acid pads or blotting papers are available over the counter and are both good options to try.

4. Moisturize

After shaving, you need to moisturize with a product that has absolutely no alcohol in it.  Avoid heavy fragrant after-shave products too, as they can irritate the skin.  Use a light moisturizer on your face after cleansing and shaving and don’t forget your neck!  In addition to facial moisturizing, take special care in providing moisture to your lips. Always keep a lip balm in your pocket to prevent lip chapping.

5. Healthy Lifestyle Habits

Avoid over exposure to the sun, exercise regularly, and eat right. Remember, everything in moderation.
Stay away from excessive alcohol, smoking, fatigue, and stress.  Not only can these factors lead to premature aging, they also decrease facial circulation making you look older.

This is really good advice because I was always hesitant about getting a facial. I don’t want to be putting all that stuff on my face and I think because I am an African-American man, I don’t need all that cosmetic stuff. However, after reading this post I feel like I have learned some things about my skin and I should treat it a little better. Thanks I will be scheduling an appointment soon. Are there any products you recommend?

JoElle

Hello Adrin,

Thank you for your comments. When you have your facial, the Esthetician will do a full skin analysis and determine the best treatments for your skin. It is after the treatment, that products will be recommended for your skin type that will be geared toward the ultimate results you desire.

Please don’t hesitate to contact with me anymore questions, comments or concerns.
