My Hair Beat- Part III Let’s Get Twisted

We’ve discussed shampoos, conditioners (regular, deep and leave-in). Whew…I know it seems like a lot but it’s not when you are in the process.  Now that your hair is clean and conditioned, it’s time to twist.  What you will use to twist depends on your texture  and the look you are trying to achieve.  I like a defined curl, twist or crinkle.  To achieve this look I must use a product and I must twist my hair while it is wet.  Here are some products I use in my twisting arsenal:

Lottabody Setting Lotion- I used this when I had a relaxer and still love it as a natural girl.  A little goes a long way and it should definitely be diluted with water.  I also add a little conditioner to the bottle as well.  It makes my twist outs very crisp and defined.  It’s of course not the most natural product,  but I just can’t stop using it.  I would suggest using a setting lotion period, something that is right for your hair texture.  I saturate my hair with it while it’s damp and begin to twist with a shea butter in my hands.

Kinky Curly Spiral Spritz- This is also a setting lotion and I use this in between Lottabody.  Sometimes I have to switch products when my hair gets used to the same product.  It’s also great for twisting and is a very natural product.  It provides great hold and definition as well.  Here is a blurb about it on the Kinky Curly website:

The perfect styling product for individuals with fine or wavy hair types.
SPIRAL SPRITZ  is a wonderful natural alternative to silicone serums.
This lightweight Aloe based spray is made of all natural ingredients and contains
vitamin B-5 to add moisture to your hair and completely eliminate frizz!
Can be used to style wet or dry wavy hair and provides a flexible hold…

Lustrasilk Shea Butter Cholesterol Plus- I learned about this product from Curly Nikki.  She did a great review on twisting with this very affordable product and I had to try it.
It’s in any beauty supply store for under $4 bucks.  My only problem with it is that it takes a little longer to dry.  But the curls look amazing.  Read and see her review here.

Barry Fletcher’s Twist Like This- This is one of my favorite twisting custards.  I combine it with a setting lotion and I have a quick drying, full and bouncy twist.  This product is great for coarse hair that needs a little help with definition.  However, it is not light-weight.  It’s very thick and can weigh down my hair from time to time.  It’s made with African butter, soybean oil, bees wax, Aloe Vera, wheat germ, selenium, vitamin B&E.  I can also use it when I re-twist at night.

I hope you try some or all of these products.  They have been my staples for quite some time.  Also let me know what you use for your double strand twists; I’m open to trying something new.  My final post in this hair series will be my favorite pluck out and everyday moisture products.

Ready…Set…BEAT!!!

This is very helpful. Is there one place where I can purchase all these under one roof, or should I go online to find them all or shop around?

Thanks for the info. I like MyGel by Joie — light, nice smell and doesn’t flake.
