I couldn’t take it anymore. I really needed to do my hair and I wasn’t looking forward to it. As I was under the dryer I remembered that I never finished writing about my hair Beat. So here goes… To recap, I have shared with you my favorite shampoos , conditioners and twisting products. Your hair should be clean, conditioned, twisted and dry. So now what? Now it’s time to unravel, shake and maintain. Here are my three easy steps.
Step One: Untwisting
When untwisting your hair it’s important that it is completely dry. A damp head can give you a limp and fuzzy twist out. I prefer it defined and spirally. Sometimes I put a little castor oil or shea butter on my hair before I untwist. It makes it soft and shiny and I LOVE THAT!!! My favorite product is AShea Shea Butter pomade. It’s great for coarse, thick hair and adds a sweet sheen.
Step Two: Scrunching and Plucking
My hair is a little flat on the first day after a fresh twist. By the second or third day, it starts to plump up on it’s own.
However, if I have somewhere to go and can’t wait a day I have to give it a little umph… I like to use DevaCurl Set It Free.
Here is what Curlmart has to say about Set it Free:
Set It Free with the extra reassurance to hold, define, de-frizz and hydrate your precious locks. Separates and secures your curls with 24-48 hour moisture lock holding power. Made with Beeswax and olive oil, this conditioning finishing mist will replenish your curls giving them the ultimate shine they need. Spray and scrunch on wet or dry hair to re-activate curls. May be used in conjunction with our DevaCurl Angell. Also a great product to use to seal the ends of your curls. Super for all curl types!
I wouldn’t say it was for all curl types. Everything is NOT going to work for everybody…
So back to adding a little umph…Sometimes my ends don’t cooperate and I have to trick them to behave. To do so, I set them on flexi rods in the morning when I wake up. I put a couple in my hair before I jump in the shower. When I get out, I take them out and have a nice little bend at the end of my twists.
Step Three: Maintaining
I can wear a twist out for about 3-5 days if I complete my maintenance regimen. At night, I make sure I twist my hair in the front. Not as neatly as I did it when it was wet but nice enough to keep a decent pattern. I twist the back in bigger chunks, just enough that it doesn’t get tangled at night. In the morning, I use Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk to rehydrate my curls. I’ve been using it for years; it really works to moisturize my curls. Again I can’t promise that it will work for you.
Here’s what Carol’s Daughter has to say:
This light, fast-absorbing lotion for the hair is made with essential oil of lemongrass to stimulate natural oil production. Vitamins C and E provide an antioxidant boost while a hint of lily of the valley fragrance perfumes hair beautifully. Hair Milk is ideal for defining natural curls and giving hair loads of shine and bounce.
There you have it, all four steps. All my natural newbies, have fun experimenting with your new tresses. To my veterans, try a new product every now and then. You may get a pleasant surprise. Share all your hair Beats with us. What are you using? Ready…Set…BEAT!!!
