“Pretty girls don’t have to spend all day in the bathroom.” My mother used to tell me that. She also said ” Pretty girls don’t need mirrors in their purses.” I’m sure she said it so she could get me out of the mirror and guess what… it worked. If I am taking a long time in the mirror or getting dressed I start to hear her voice, at 30 something I still want to be a pretty girl.
I loved to watch my mom get ready for work or church. My mom wasn’t glamorous, but it wasn’t about that. It was her simplicity that made and continues to make her beautiful. From fluffing her hair to rubbing a little lipstick on her cheeks when she didn’t have blush, she made it all look so refined, demure and beautiful. I longed for the day to sit in that vanity chair and dust a little powder on my face. Her staples were Oil of Olay moisturizer, Ivory soap and make up items from Avon. ( I remember her picking up her stash from my cousins and giving us the perfume samples and chapstick.)
Moms are very influential in helping us create our beauty regimen. I was curious about what other moms told their daughters about beauty, so I sent out an email to friends and colleagues and loved their responses. Here are a few I wanted to share:
“For me and my Mom, lipstick. She is huge on having on lipstick. She was the first one to introduce me to Fashion Fair and the lipstick selection they had–lol. Also, perfume. SHE LOVES PERFUME. My grandmother was the same way. Always had on lipstick and made sure she smelled delicious, even in her 80′s! Never fall asleep wearing makeup.”
“Ambi Fade Cream – she used it as a daily moisturizer for her face and hands. Her hands and face were beautiful, soft and even tone. She also looked way younger than her 75 years.”
“The best for me….using vaseline to remove masacra. Works everytime!”
“Mom always said “acting ugly, makes you ugly.”
“Vitamins, vitamins, vitamins. They give you energy, which in turn translates into beauty.”
“My mom taught me the importance of cleansing and moisturizing your skin. It took me forever to develop the habit of washing my face every night. I’d often sleep in makeup. Finally her words sunk in. She doesn’t use fancy cleansers just Dove beauty bar, while I’ve tried every product under the sun but her regimen has been proven. “
“My mom never leaves home without wearing pressed powder. Like her I have oily skin and am the same way. Also like my mother I’m always blotting or repowdering. She was a decades long Fashion Fair and Alta user until I turned her on to Iman Perfect Response Blotting Pressed Powder. It takes away the excess oil that develops throughout the day without piling on more and more powder.”
What did your mom teach you about beauty? Thanks to all moms for being our beauty icons and role models. I hope one day I can tell my daughter what pretty girls should do…. Ready…Set…BEAT!!!
Have a Happy Mother’s Day!!!!

LaWanda!!! I love it. This post is wonderful. Happy Mother’s Day Mom. I love you!
I love this post! I can tell most of the people you quoted are around my age because that whole list was my mom! And your memories of your mom = mine too! Such a lady. lol My mom was all about her red lipstick. It had to be red.
I’d forgotten about the flavored chapstick from Avon. My mom used to give it to me too. Beautiful post about a beautiful lady.
Sniff, Sniff, beautiful!
I love it. …especially the features on you friends and the first one…wink, wink.
I love these pictures. This is a beautiful post and a lovely tribute. Your mom is so pretty.!

My mom has applied Nivea at night for as long as I can remember. A true southern Belle, she never leaves the house without at least lipstick on. If I’m without lipstick and we’re about to go somewhere she takes me to task: “Girl, where is your lipstick! You never know who you’re going to meet!”
